Our Story

The idea to create KIDzOUT began several years ago on the North Shore of Hawaii with a blowout of the worst kind: the diaper variety…complete with tears and screaming.

KIDzOUT is a map-based mobile application for families on the go. It helps moms and dads find everything from diaper deck locations, to family-friendly restaurants, to places to play to the nearest urgent care, emergency room or pharmacy.

"We were on a family vacation in Hawaii, when our infant daughter had a diaper emergency at a roadside food stand,” recalls KIDzOUT co-founder Jen Sieve-Hicks.

Jen recalls that in their family’s desperation to get the baby clean and into clean clothes, they ended up driving a half-hour back to their hotel room in order to clean up their daughter and get a fresh change of clothes.

Over the months and years, multiple road-trips, and the birth of a second child, the idea to create a mobile application for families on the go began to take root.

“We would be driving 600 miles across Wyoming, South Dakota and into Minnesota in the middle of winter, when it became obvious that one of the kids needed a diaper change,” said Jen. “Robb and I would then begin the guessing game. Was it this gas station or that one that had the diaper deck? Was this the diaper deck that was so disgusting last time?”

“We all know the safe bets in our own neighborhoods,” said Jen’s husband and KIDzOUT co-founder Robb Hicks. “Jen and I started envisioning an atlas-type resource that would pinpoint restrooms with diaper decks and baby-friendly restaurants.”

Every parent the Hickses talked to felt that a diaper deck locater was not just a luxury item, but a necessity for any young family on the go. So Robb called KIDzOUT co-founder Seth Heine to inquire about how to go about creating a phone app.

As the app’s features came into focus, one thing became clear to the co-founders: KIDzOUT research relevant locations and release an app that was populated with the information users needed.

“This app is ready with the information users need: diaper deck locations, places to play, kid-friendly restaurants and medical facilities, ” Seth said. “We went to incredible efforts to pre-populate our app with over 250,000 locations,” said Seth.

Users can help populate locations in the application and rank the quality of the facilities, as well as amenities (high chairs, playground features etc).

“We wanted our mobile app to be useful in all fifty states, in both metropolitan and rural areas,” said Robb. “We didn’t want the app to only have major chain locations, so we have encouraged users, retailers, and other businesses to help families know where to go by uploading new locations and ranking existing locations.”
